What Is Subclade K? The Flu Strain That Changed the 2026 Vaccine

Quick answer: Subclade K is a branch of influenza A(H3N2) that emerged late in Australia’s 2025 season and helped push it well past its usual finish. It is an example of antigenic drift — the reason flu vaccines are rebuilt every year rather than made once.

If you saw “subclade K” in the news and wondered whether your team ended up with the wrong vaccine this winter, this is the short version of what actually happened.

What subclade K is, and what it isn’t

Influenza A is divided into subtypes. The two that circulate in people are A(H1N1) and A(H3N2). Within a subtype, the virus keeps splitting into smaller branches, and “subclade K” is the informal name that stuck to one branch of A(H3N2).

It is not a new disease and not a new kind of flu. It is the same influenza A that Australian workplaces see every winter, changed enough from the previous season’s vaccine strain to behave differently.

Why Australia’s 2025 season ran so long

Australia’s 2025 season did not taper off through spring the way an influenza season usually does. The surveillance write-up in Eurosurveillance — published under the title Extended influenza seasons in Australia and New Zealand in 2025 due to the emergence of influenza A(H3N2) subclade K viruses — describes “an unusually long season stretching from May to November (opens in new tab)“.

A season that keeps climbing when it should be finishing is what put the name in the news.

Why flu strains change at all

This has a proper name, and it is worth knowing because it explains everything that follows. The Australian Immunisation Handbook calls it antigenic drift: the surface of the virus changes in small steps, season after season, until it no longer matches what the vaccine was built against.

That drift is precisely why the vaccine is rebuilt each year instead of made once. In the Handbook’s words, “the composition of influenza vaccines needs to be reviewed every year because of antigenic drift (opens in new tab)“.

So a strain moving is not the system failing. It is the thing the system was built around.

Did the 2026 vaccine change because of it?

The strains are named publicly every year, so this one is checkable rather than a matter of opinion.

The 2025 southern-hemisphere vaccine carried an A(H3N2) component based on A/Croatia/10136RV/2023 — the strain Eurosurveillance names when it describes “the 2025 southern hemisphere recommended vaccine (opens in new tab)“.

For 2026, the Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee recommended a different A(H3N2) strain: A/Singapore/GP20238/2024 for egg-based vaccines, and A/Sydney/1359/2024 for cell-based ones. Both are listed in the Committee’s published recommendations “for the 2026 southern hemisphere trivalent influenza vaccines in Australia (opens in new tab)“.

So the answer to “did we get last year’s vaccine?” is no. The A(H3N2) component of the 2026 Australian flu vaccine is a different strain from the one used in 2025, chosen and published before supply reached the market.

One other change gets confused with this, so it is worth separating. Australia’s 2026 vaccine protects against three strains rather than four — NCIRS describes the “transition from quadrivalent to trivalent formulations (opens in new tab)” — because one influenza B strain, B/Yamagata, has not been detected anywhere in the world since 2020.

What this means for your workplace

Three practical things.

  • There is nothing to request. The strain mix is set by the World Health Organisation and the Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee before supply reaches the market. There is no “subclade K version” to ask for — it is already what the 2026 A(H3N2) component reflects.
  • The clinic date does more work than the strain name. The Handbook describes the antibodies a flu vaccine produces as ones that “reduce infection or severe illness due to influenza (opens in new tab)“. Those are two different jobs, and neither of them starts until people are actually vaccinated.
  • If someone on your team asks, the answer is short. The vaccine is rebuilt every year against what is actually circulating, and this year’s A strain is not last year’s. That is the system doing its job, which is worth saying plainly to anyone who has seen a strain name in a headline.
